Taos County is facing a severe pet overpopulation crisis, with stray animals breeding, forming packs, getting hit by vehicles, and even attacking pets, livestock, and people. This situation has created a public safety issue.
Many people end up keeping animals who turn up at their house or business. A lot of our clients have multiple pets, some as many as 20-30 animals! With the inflation rate for veterinary care far outpacing the overall inflation rate, access to spay and neuter services is beyond the reach of a high percentage of our population. A cat spay costs around $250 at a for-profit clinic. A large dog spay can run over $1000!
Spay Taos has created our clinic to provide FREE services to our community to remove barriers to spay and neuter services. Our services include vaccines and microchips, plus aftercare support, all free. We are providing a real solution to a serious problem. Our funding comes from grants, government entities, and most of all, individual donors.
How can you help? Please donate what you are able to help our community. Our average cost per animal is approximately $130. Large dogs can cost us over $250! Our cost for vaccines averages $12. Microchips are $5. In addition to providing the basic services, we also offer free antibiotics or parasite treatment as needed.
